He is teaching us to pray to God but in his name because Jesus is only way to God. Without faith in his sacrificial death we wouldn’t have salvation. But without God we would not have Jesus. He always prayed to his Father, admitting that without him he would not be able to do anything.

Why does God care if you believe in him?

We both worship and pray to God in the name of Jesus. We worship Jesus because He is the Son of God and for all He has done for us. Jesus never said to worship him or address prayers to him or to anyone else, accept to Almighty God, his heavenly Father.
